Freedom and responsibility

Each one of us has to decide what ends he thinks it right to pursue and what principles he is prepared to stand by … there is no escaping this responsibility.

AJ Ayer, humanist philosopher (1910 – 1989)

How far should our freedom stretch? What responsibilities come with freedom?  Can our connections with others limit or enhance our freedom? Find out why humanists value freedom so highly and the responsibilities they believe we have to ourselves and to others.

Freedom, responsibility, connections

In this lesson students will learn why humanists value freedom so highly. They will learn about the responsibilities humanists believe come attached to our freedom. They will explore some of the challenges freedom and responsibility give rise to. They will evaluate the impact our connections with others have on our freedom to live our lives the way we want. Modelling our lives using a piece of string, they will gain an insight into the humanist perspective on human nature, our potential, our ties to others, and the conclusions humanists reach about how we should live.
